MAI: Romanian authorities linked to SIS II (Schengen Information System)

The Romanian authorities are now linked to the second generation Schengen Information System (SIS II), which became operational in Romania the same as it is in the other 26 Schengen member states, following to be used in the daily activity of relevant authorities enforcing the law, reads a press release of the Ministry of Interior (MAI).

'The Schengen Information System is a police information system established at EU level and used by the Schengen member states for operational cooperation. The SIS represents one of the compensatory measures introduced by the member states in the context of abolition of internal border checkpoints in the Schengen space, for maintaining order and public security', MAI said in a release to Agerpres.

Romania has joined the ISS in October 2010 through SISone4ALL, an intermediate technological solution developed by Portugal.

On the occasion of the Schengen evaluation visit in the SIS / SIRENE field in December 2010, European experts have concluded that Romania complies with Schengen standards for the use of SIS.

Last year, Romania has successfully performed all preliminary tests for SIS II, along with other member states.
SIS II began to be developed in 2005 as an improved variant of SIS I, launched in 1995 with the first Schengen signatories.

'New innovations in information technology and the need to identify more effective ways to combat organized crime and the appropriate management of migration in Europe resulted in law enforcement authorities carrying out an upgrade of this police system', said MAI.

SIS II includes new functionalities that will help law enforcement authorities to exchange the information more effectively in order to ensure security for justice, security and freedom.

In 2012, Romanian cops, together with partners on the territory of the other Schengen member states, identified 5,966 people and 1,834 goods which were subject of alerts in the Schengen Information System, thanks to the exchange of data and additional information via the SIRENE bureau.

Also last year, following the additional exchange of information through the SIRENE Bureau of the IPCC — IGRP, law enforcement authorities in Romania located on the territory of our country 3,843 persons subject to alerts in the SIS.

The Romanian cops have implemented 591 EAW and have identified 162 persons reported as missing and also 1,627 people sought to participate in judicial proceedings.

At the same time, there were identified in Romania 1,485 cars seek by partners in the Schengen space for freezing or use as evidence in various lawsuits.

Also, 2,123 people sought by Romanian authorities were identified by foreign partners on their territory, following the exchange of information via the SIRENE Bureau of the IPCC — IGRP. Of these, 1,413 people were pursued by Romanian police under a European Arrest Warrant, 104 were reported missing and 312 were sought for participation in judicial proceedings.

Over 300 vehicles reported by the Romanian authorities for freezing or to be used as evidence in criminal proceedings have been identified in the member states. AGERPRES
