Urge Your Senator to Demand Accountability for Missile Defense
After spending more than $40 billion since 1982, the United States has a system of 30 missile "interceptors" in place in Alaska and California intended to destroy in mid-flight long-range missiles launched at U.S. territory. The problem is, the interceptors don't work reliably, even in highly-scripted tests. In fact, there hasn't been a successful intercept test of the system since 2008, using the old version of the interceptor. Under real-world conditions, success is even less likely.
But guess what? Some folks in the Pentagon and Congress think it’s a good idea to buy 14 more interceptors, at $75 million each, even though the version they would buy has never had a successful intercept test. This effort offers the illusion of security for the American public while wasting tax dollars on a system that has yet to be proven to protect us.
Here's the good news: your senator, as a member of a critical oversight committee, can do something about this boondoggle. On June 11, the head of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency will testify at a critical hearing of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
Urge your senator to attend the hearing, demand accountability, and insist that the nation's missile defense program adhere to rigorous "fly before your buy" performance and reliability standards. In short, insist that the system actually works before we spend billions more on unproven technology.
