    Job description

    The RAND Corporation is seeking a Director of Development, Research Programs, who will be responsible for developing resources for research and analysis relating to international and global affairs, including Middle East, Asia, Russia and Eurasia, and global risk and security, and other programs as assigned.  Donors to RAND include U.S. and international leaders in the private and non-profit sectors, former government officials, as well as academia.

    The Director of Development, Research Programs will work closely with the leadership of several RAND units and centers to identify, cultivate and steward donors for our advisory boards and develop major gift fundraising initiatives to support the long-term priorities of RAND.  He/she must have the ability to effectively communicate RAND's mission and vision, as well as the priorities of the advisory boards and the multidisciplinary programs that each one supports.  This position reports to the Executive Director of Development.

    May perform any or all of the following duties: 
    • Identify and implement best practices for stewarding advisory boards for the purpose of supporting fundraising goals
    • Support the growth of advisory boards by identifying prospective members, recruiting them to participate, and stewarding current and new board members
    • Create programs of interest to foster relationships with prospects and donors and solicit annual gifts ($30,000 and up) from advisory board members with the assistance of RAND and volunteer leaders
    • Qualify and cultivate donors to engage them for potential major gifts ($100,000 and up) to support institutional fundraising priorities
    • In collaboration with a Communications professional, develop written materials for donors highlighting the mission, vision and activities of the unit or center supported by the board
    • Help train research staff about donor and fundraising strategies and practices
    • Participate actively in the development and execution of advisory board activities, including meeting agendas and fundraising content
    • Create annual fundraising projections and progress reports

    Qualifications 
    Required Qualifications  
    • Knowledge of major gift fund-raising principles  
    • Interest in and knowledge of global and international affairs and public policy, with an ability to translate related funding cases to donors   
    • Experience working with high level advisory board members and donors
    • Ability to balance concurrent priorities and deadlines
    • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external colleagues
    • Creative thinker and problem solver
    • Ability to travel 15-20% of the time including international travel

    Preferred Qualifications 
    • Experience working with researchers for fundraising initiatives
    • Fundraising database experience

    Education Requirements 
    Bachelors Degree; advanced degree preferred

    Experience 
    Related experience required: minimum of 5 years
