Title
Mid- or Senior-Level Health Researcher / Schaeffer Fellow
Overview of RAND
The RAND Corporation is a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities throughout the world safer and more secure, healthier and more prosperous. RAND’s research and analysis address issues that impact people everywhere, including security, health, education, sustainability, growth, and development. Headquartered in Santa Monica, California, RAND has approximately 1,700 people from more than 45 countries working in offices in North America, Europe and Australia, with annual revenues of more than $260 million.

RAND is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and committed to the public interest.  Our research is sponsored by government agencies, foundations, other nonprofit organizations, and the private sector. We rely on philanthropic support to reach beyond the scope of client-sponsored work to tackle questions that may be too big, too complex, or too new for our clients to address. RAND values objectivity and integrity in both its research processes and internal interactions. We emphasize a collegial environment that respects the contributions and dignity of all staff.
Position Description
RAND is seeking a mid- or senior-level health economist or health policy researcher who in their first year of employment at RAND will receive the Schaeffer Fellowship — a joint initiative of RAND Health (www.rand.org/health) and USC Schaeffer Center (http://healthpolicy.usc.edu).  The Schaeffer Fellowship provides structured mentoring from RAND and USC Schaeffer Center faculty and funding for a one year term, with the possibility of an additional renewable term. Schaeffer Fellows build collaboration between RAND and USC, develop a research agenda tackling pressing health policy issues, and disseminate research to policy audiences.

This position is open to doctoral-level researchers in economics, health policy, health services research, or related fields, and to clinical researchers with research training and experience in health policy. Persons with strong training in health policy research and analysis; experience in building a health policy research portfolio; experience in all phases of research and analysis including study design, analysis, and dissemination; and a collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit are encouraged to apply.

Researchers at RAND (www.rand.org) work on solving real-world problems, including identifying how health systems function and determining where and how change has to occur. In addition to a large array of government- and foundation-funded research projects, RAND Health also conducts nonproprietary research and analysis on issues of public interest on behalf of private health care organizations and firms. Researchers work in multidisciplinary teams that include health policy researchers, economists, natural scientists, epidemiologists, and others with relevant training. They apply rigorous, empirical research designs to analyze health policy issues and evaluate programs
Qualifications
Successful applicants will have expertise in one or more specific areas of health policy research, demonstrated quantitative and/or qualitative research skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to lead and work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team, a strong publication record, a commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity, and a successful track record of securing federal funding (grants or contracts). Senior researchers at RAND are expected to show a demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary teams, to mentor junior staff, and to communicate interim and final results to the RAND community as well as to scientific and policymaking audiences.
Education Requirements
Ph.D. in economics, health policy, or related fields, and/or an M.D. with health policy research experience.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of research experience post-PhD or MD for the mid level, minimum 10 years for senior level. An established record of excellence in research, including a strong academic publication record consistent with experience is expected. Salary is commensurate with experience.
