Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement in reaction to the immigration bill unveiled at the White House today:
“The immigration bill unveiled today by the White House betrays our country’s values. My mother emigrated from Russia as a child—she couldn’t speak English and had no education. Her daughter graduated from college and became a U.S. Senator. Under this bill, my mother would have been turned away.
“The bill says that hard-working immigrants in ‘low-skilled’ jobs can never have the opportunity to earn a green card. In California, that would mean farmworkers who have worked in the country for years would be permanently ineligible to apply for a green card.
“Our country shouldn’t tell immigrants who perform the most thankless jobs in our society that they can work here but they can’t build lives here. That’s not what this country is all about.
“The bill would also keep elements of the scandal-ridden EB-5 program, which sells citizenship to wealthy foreigners, while at the same time permanently capping the number of refugees at 50,000 during the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II. What does it say about this administration’s values that wealthy individuals are allowed in while people fleeing horrific violence are turned away?
“I’m also troubled by the bill’s effects on children. Not only does it preclude parents from reuniting with their children abroad, the bill would also eliminate a special program for abused, abandoned and neglected children. The America I know has compassion for vulnerable children, regardless of where they were born.
“The only solution to our broken immigration system is comprehensive reform. This bill doesn’t achieve that and I will do all I can to oppose it.”
